Woodpecker Wars
by admin - 19:39 on 26 August 2012
Life's been nothing but work recently: markets at Torridon and North Kessock and much effort on behalf of Chatterbox, which concluded today (out soon, only £1.30). Both markets returned a profit, thanks to the sale of Tess books and cards, but there's still little risk of me passing the threshold at which Mr Taxman will become interested.
However, there has been some time available to stand and stare, mainly at the peanut feeder outside the living room window which, because of a peanut crisis, is currently the only one in operation.
This has brought the woodpeckers into closer view and allowed us to see through their fine plumage to the vicious bullies beneath. Two juveniles and at least two adults are regular garden visitors, leading to much squabbling amongst themselves.
One thing they do agree on is that even much smaller birds aren't welcome on the feeder when any of them is in residence; all varieties of tits and finches have been subject to swift and merciless peckery.
The peanut crisis will be remedied tomorrow, just in time to prevent blood being spilled.
