Introducing Maia

by admin - 23:55 on 07 September 2012

The Rural Retreat is no longer catless. And not only do we have the adult cat with us, we also have two boisterous kittens penned in my office until they've settled in enough to be given the run of the cottage. Matchgirl is in heaven; I'm suddenly severely outnumbered by females.

Matchgirl has named our two-year-old all-black cat Maia. The formerly unfortunate but now hugely lucky moggy was an Edinburgh stray, picked up in mid-May, who was moved to Inverness after failing to find a home in the big city.

The kittens, as yet unnamed, are eight weeks old and the last of their litter to be homed. One is grey with white streaks and already a champion climber and explorer. Her sister is all-grey and a little more timid but still keen to get everywhere, which isn't difficult when no gap is too small.

Much snappery is sure to occur. When it begins, Maia will be a challenge – a black cat's portrait is not easy to capture. The kittens are, of course, one hundred per cent photogenic. Being fast enough to snap them will be the difficulty.

There was a timely reminder of Tess this morning when I received an order from a wholesaler for ten copies of her book. Later in the day I sold a further copy at Aultbea market. She's going to be a hard act to follow.
