A Fortunate Find

Having no inclination to go far today, I looked for Day Five's Snapathon subject in the garden, where for a while I'd had my eye on an old lichen-stained fence post. From there, the Pentax turned its auto-focus on to some gnarled hedge limbs.
Back inside The Rural Retreat, seated at the Mac, the results were disappointing: the fence post produced some fantastic colours but, with no focal point, the image looked like a background with a missing subject; the hedge was simply uninteresting.
Fortunately, I'd taken some last-minute snaps of the discoloured end of a sawn-off branch which I knew I'd be able to crop tightly. The finished image, after I'd adjusted the levels and increased the contrast, pleased me greatly. Were it not for the Snapathon I would never have noticed the potential of the branch, which just goes to show.
Matchgirl, I confess, was less impressed with the snap. She should be a competition judge.
Feline Update: More cat-walking took place today, although over a shorter distance than yesterday. Maia hardly complained at all and even joined The Fearless Ones in clambering over walls and rooting around in the undergrowth. We'll make an outdoor cat of her yet.
