Hot Times In Hawick
by Russell Turner - 16:30 on 30 September 2015
Sometimes everything comes together just right, such as leaving for a week's holiday in the Borders on the first day of what's forecast to be at least a week of Indian summer. Shame I didn't get round to mowing the lawn before we left.
We left The Rural Retreat yesterday, just in time to miss cat-sitters Soo and Tony (not intentionally), who will be at the beck and call of The Pride in our absence. The A9 was not fun, especially through the roadworks, and the Edinburgh ring road rush hour traffic even less so. To pass the time we listened to Simon Mayo on the radio and came up with our own three-word Tuesdays.
“Holiday begins today” was mine. “Stuck in traffic” was Matchgirl's. A clearer indication of our differing life views is difficult to imagine.
She'd cheered up by the time we left the ring road on the A7 to Hawick and all the traffic had disappeared. Within ten minutes we were in another country – an attractive one too. If you like rolling, manicured hills and sturdy little towns the Borders is the place to be.
Our holiday cottage is two miles south of Hawick and has everything that can be asked for of a secluded rural property apart from an adjustable shower head. I'll continue to stoop; such is life.
This morning we enjoyed a pleasant stroll along a footpath to town, where we checked out a few shops, had lunch, gathered some necessaries from Sainsbury's, then walked back. The sun shone from a cloudless sky without a breath of wind. Before we left the Highlands, longer walks had been proposed for subsequent days. If the tropical weather continues we may have to re-plan some routes.
The Pentax did accompany us, but no snaps were snapped. I'll try harder tomorrow.
Tonight we'll relax with a Sainsbury feast (Matchgirl's already worried about her waistline) and watch the semi-final of Bake Off. Even on holiday, some things can't be changed.
