So Little Time...
by Russell Turner - 16:52 on 31 December 2015
Just a few hours to go until the end of 2015, although it felt more like the end of the world in Tesco this afternoon where it was heaving with desperate shoppers, fearful they'd run out of booze or nibbles before midnight. The car park was packed, the aisles were choked, the checkout queues were long and slow, and just when it couldn't get any worse someone began playing the bagpipes, and it did.
So it was a relief to get back to the relative sanity of The Rural Retreat and two bored cats and one bored and hungry one (no prizes for guessing which). The frost that still covered the lawn was a clue as to why they weren't keen on the outdoors, unlike Matchgirl The Athlete who'd only just got home after her last long run of 2015.
It's fortunate that the temperature didn't combine with yesterday's rain or we'd have had two feet of snow and Maia would have been even more unhappy. There's time yet.
Other recent wintry signs are the appearance in the garden of some seasonal visitors – a pair of bramblings and a fieldfare – and the tips of the first snowdrops. A few primroses are already in bloom. More noteworthy visitors are the goldfinches. We usually see only the occasional pair, but word must have spread that I've swapped the regular feeder mix for sunflower hearts. This morning I counted nine goldies, and there may have been more.
The band isn't out tonight (although we've gigs the following two nights) so Matchgirl and I will be able to welcome in the new year together, with the dubious assistance of The Pride. Who would want to be anywhere else?
