The Recovery Continues
by Russell Turner - 15:09 on 04 March 2018
Two days after training resumed with a flat 30 minutes, today I covered 4.5 miles in 50 minutes, including some not-too-steep ascents and gentle descents, among them the one where I broke down almost three weeks ago. The only walking was a couple of minutes of steep downhill. I’m taking no chances.
My pace is not too far away from what it was but the brief lay-off has obviously affected my fitness because heart rate has increased. Or maybe the remnant of the Siberian chill is to blame: conditions were cold and occasionally breezy; a thin snow fell not long after I returned. The effort didn’t feel much different to that expended in the past so with luck the rate will fall again soon.
Matchgirl, who’d left The Rural Retreat two hours before me, also missed the snow, which was just reward after 15 hilly miles. She’s a determined girl.
Next week’s runs, now the official schedule’s in shreds, have not yet been fully determined. I hope to hit 70 minutes (or 10k) on Tuesday and two hours/10 miles on Friday – my much-delayed Week 8 long run – before two City Limits gigs rule out any weekend athleticism.
Week 9’s been scrapped. Week 10 begins next Monday and ends, in theory, with a 2.5-hour/12-14-mile long run. I’ll build up to 3.5hrs/18-20 miles in Week 13, scrap Week 14, then have a nice two-week taper ending on The Big Day.
The best laid plans… Wish me luck.
