A Spring In The Step

by Russell Turner - 16:49 on 09 March 2018

It must be spring: sunshine and blue skies, no wind, cool in shadow but warm in the sun, which made it a good day for my first post-injury long run, beside the Cromarty Firth. The views were magnificent. Ninety minutes and 8+ miles was the target. In fact I made it 100 minutes so I could reach nine miles. And the legs feel fine.

I’d set off with various permutations of run/walk times in my head, unsure which one to use, but came up with a new one: run two miles (21-22 minutes) then walk for a quarter mile, apart from the final quarter which was also run. If I can keep up the pace should reach 11 miles in two hours next Friday.

The spring-like conditions meant that in two shirts and tights I was a bit overdressed. If the weather stays like this the shorts may reappear, despite the shock my bare legs will give unsuspecting drivers on the Cromarty road.

After four post-injury runs of increasing length, on Monday I’ll return to a more modest 40 minutes, which will be a relief, as will a non-sporty weekend. Two gigs, including one tonight, mean I’ll be on my feet more than I or Adam the Physio would wish but you’ve got to take the work when you can.
