She’s Got The Look

by Russell Turner - 17:30 on 28 March 2018

That’s another training run completed – just nine left, including the two longest long runs.

I abandoned my plan for seven miles non-stop after sharing the idea with Matchgirl and receiving The Look. “Don’t push it when you’re so close,” is the gist of her sensible objection. The Look has also been aired when I’ve mentioned the metronome, her resistance based on the principle that at this stage I shouldn’t be trying new things.

She may be right. I started today’s run with the metronome set at 150bpm, which is what I’d comfortably finished at yesterday, and found myself charging off at a ridiculous pace. Very strange. So I switched it off and spent the rest of the run without the accompaniment of digital beeps.

I settled for running 60 minutes (non-stop), which turned out to be 5.6 miles. The pace was only a little too fast, but as a long downhill followed an initial climb that’s probably why.

Matchgirl practises The Look

Next up is the penultimate long run: three hours in which I should cover 16-18 miles, if my original training schedule is to be believed. It also recommends doing it in six chunks of 28mins run/2mins walk. I’ll give it a go, along with much more water than in the previous long runs. My hopes of everything suddenly clicking are undimmed.
