More Bullying By The Garmin
by Russell Turner - 22:00 on 18 September 2018
The Garmin that Matchgirl bought for my birthday continues to sneer at me. Today, at the beginning of the week which will end with my final long run, of at least 18 miles and 3.5 hours, I completed a 50-minute run begun in drizzle and ended in rain. At least there was no wind. And even better, my niggle didn’t return.
I set off at a comfortable pace with turned out to be around 12:00min/ml – a very modest pace, but it was supposed to be an easy run, the weather was rubbish and I might be incubating germs brought back from Shetland by Matchgirl. Despite that, I finished OK and looked forward to some encouragement from my training timepiece.
There was none. Not only did the Garmin class none of my run as ‘vigorous intensity’ (which I’d expected), it didn’t recognise it as ‘moderate intensity’ either. As moderate translates into a brisk walk, the watch must have though I was strolling.
I’m out again on Thursday, Storm Ali permitting, when I have to run easy, steady, fast, faster and easy in 10-minute blocks. Maybe that will satisfy my digital tormentor.
Feline Update: Yesterday Willow arrived home suspiciously dry despite the rain outside. Today I saw her sneaking through the neighbour’s cat-flap. There may be some connection. Meanwhile, Maia is being driven mad by an empty egg box that’s become impregnated with savoury aromas through close proximity in the fridge with some Tesco cooked chicken. Cats – always unpredictable.

I cannot get a picture of Maia snuggling up in her basket with her egg box now.
