A Step In The Right Direction

by Russell Turner - 20:56 on 04 November 2018

It usually takes some effort to break a bass guitar string – something I’d done only once in my entire musical career until last night’s wedding gig in Elgin when the A string popped during Don’t Stop Believing. Some players could have carried on as though nothing had happened, finding the right notes on other strings, but I’m not one of them. Not on that song, anyway.

I fluffed and fumbled to the finish then hurried to the back room where our cases were dumped, retrieved spare strings from the bass case and was soon back in action. Maybe I should replace my strings more often than once a year…

Earlier in the day I’d taken part in my first proper fundraiser towards my £2,000 London Marathon total with a table at the Cats Protection Winter Fair in Alness. Thanks to some sponsorship and sales of Tess books and a few old prints I enjoyed an £87 boost to reach 11% of my target figure: £237 – another £3 and my giving page will show 12%.

I’ve a few other things lined up, including a benefit gig in January (details to follow), but all donations are still welcome. The link’s at the top of the page.

Despite last night’s late finish I completed my second easy 30-minute run this afternoon. Distance rose (slightly) and heart rate fell (slightly). I’ve three more half-hour trots planned for next week as part of my continuing post-Yorkshire Marathon recovery; hopefully, rise and fall will both keep moving in the right direction.

Even better news is that Matchirl’s recovery continues; it can’t be long before our training plans converge and we can run together. Until she overtakes me again, that is. I’ll make the most of being The Rural Retreat’s leading athlete while I can.
