Half-way There And Two-thirds There
by Russell Turner - 22:46 on 07 March 2019
London Marathon training continues. Tuesday was the big day, when I set myself a 13.1-mile target, carefully timed so it fell on a still, cool, sunny day rather than the windblown and rainy ones that surrounded it. Flexibility is useful.
I tried out a small water bladder backpack on a two-mile there-and-back, decided I could live with it (though it’s a nuisance) and stuck with it for the rest of the run. Water stations are much handier. It must have helped because apart from a three-minute walk after 50 minutes, when I took an energy gel, I ran the entire distance.
I’d intended another walk and gel, after 100 minutes, but didn’t want to slow in case I couldn’t get going again. This was not best practice, and probably explained why I wilted towards the end (although my pace stayed steady). More gels will be taken next time.
The result was a half marathon in 2:18. I’ll do another next week at a run/walk and see how they compare. My hope of a 5:15 marathon is still alive.
There’s now just over seven weeks until The Big Day. Today I reached two-thirds of my £2,000 fundraising total. I’m optimistic that I’ll hit the target, if not on the day then shortly after. We'll see.
