A Tough Time In The Wind
by Russell Turner - 20:46 on 28 March 2019
And then there was one: just one more long run before I ease off ahead of London Marathon day on April 28.
Today’s long run (another 8:2 run/walk) was hampered by a strong wind that would have been even colder and stronger if I’d run the flat road to Cromarty, alongside the firth, so I had to go twice around a hilly loop and finish with a two-mile there-and-back to hit the three-hour mark.
It was hard going, and my hoped-for 17 miles became 16 at a much slower pace than last week. I toyed with the thought of running a bit further but couldn’t find the energy. The only positive is that the wind and hills mean I did some serious resistance training.
Unlike in my last two marathon training programmes, so far (touch wood) I remain injury-free and even the niggles I felt a few weeks ago have disappeared. I must be due a lucky break, and that after a heatwave and a monsoon my next marathon won’t take place in a typhoon. A mild, dry, windless day would be good. I think I’ve earned it.
One week to the final long run – 3.5 hours, 18+ miles – then I begin the three-week taper of fewer and fewer miles. I’m looking forward to it.
