Rejected But Not Dejected
by Russell Turner - 14:36 on 08 October 2019
It wasn’t to be: yesterday I received the expected news that I’m not one of the lucky ballot winners of a place in the 2020 London Marathon, which means I’ll have to stay home and watch the fun on TV or find an alternative.
The same day there are marathons and halves (or possibly halfs) in Southampton and Stratford; the week before that the Brighton Marathon takes place and there’s also one in Annecy, which Matchgirl fancies, but as the cut-off is 5:30, and I’m yet to run inside that time, it may be a non-starter for me. Also, I can take up a guaranteed Edinburgh Marathon place in May, which is a strong possibility despite the £62 entry fee. Some races are pricier than others.
City Limits gigs permitting (next year’s pub bookings should appear later this month), I’m leaning towards Stratford (the Shakespeare Marathon) and Edinburgh, although I’m undecided about which would be the HM and which the full. Two full marathons four weeks apart might be pushing it a bit.
There are also a stack of possible warm-up HMs and 10ks pencilled in during March and April and a few more in June and July. I suspect that musical duties will help shape the forthcoming programme.
Later in the year is equally uncertain: the Loch Ness Marathon/RiverNess 10k, Great Scottish Run and Chester Marathon, which I’ve been pondering, all fall on the same day, two weeks before the Yorkshire Marathon. Some hard decisions will have to be made.
What does seem certain is that my running career still has some way to go. Better late than never.
