Eliud, Brigid And Cathy

by Russell Turner - 20:57 on 13 October 2019

It’s been some marathon weekend: Eliud breaks the two-hour barrier, Brigid smashes the women’s record at Chicago, and in the same race Triathon Cathy finishes in under four hours and bags a London good for age time and a Boston qualifying time. What a star.

My own activity was much more modest. For my final proper run, before three tiddlers next week, I rehearsed my one mile run/one minute walk plan for next Sunday’s Yorkshire Marathon and covered a quarter of the distance in 1:08:36 – 10:30min/mile pace. That’s five minutes too fast and unlikely to be something I could sustain until the end, which is a nuisance. Pacing is still a tricky business.

I suspect I’ll follow the five-hour pacer (11:20) for the first couple of miles then switch to run/walk with the runs at as close to 10:45-11:00 as I can manage. The theory is brilliant; how it works in practice, time will tell.

There’s more excitement on the way to The Rural Retreat. Following the recent bathroom makeover, plans are almost complete for a new kitchen. Layout and style have been settled following consultations with Howdens; all that’s left to do is choose some sparkling new white goods, including the monster fridge-freezer which Matchgirl has desired for years. The Pride will hate it.
