Chaos In The Kitchen
by Russell Turner - 22:02 on 26 November 2019
The Big Kitchen Clearout, in which Matchgirl and I moved its contents, bar white goods, into a heap in the living room, meant that Sunday was a busy day. The Pride was not impressed, although it found compensation in new places to climb and explore. The compensation for us was the thought that The Great Kitchen Installation would begin the next day.
It didn’t. Illness had struck Mr Joiner’s family with the result that he, Mr Electrician and Mr General Assistant were unable to begin work until today. The Pride was even less impressed: Pandora disappeared almost immediately after their arrival at 9.30am; Willow stayed a couple of hours more, then performed her own vanishing act; Maia loitered in the bedroom until she found the courage to join me in the office where the next Chatterbox was being created.
The kitchen team didn’t hang around, I’m pleased to report. Sounds of men at work and Radio 1 soon echoed up the stairs as the old units were ripped out, tiles prised off the wall, new socket holes cut and shortly-to-be-redundant white goods dumped in the garden. Water and electricity were off only briefly.
A last look at the old kitchen
New shrink-wrapped units, worktops and associated bits and pieces were then hauled indoors from Mr J’s van and assembly began, disturbed by the arrival of a Curry’s van bearing a washing machine, hob and the huge fridge-freezer Matchgirl has dreamed of for years. Much sawing and banging ensued. A little later an AO van delivered an oven and – another Matchgirl dream come true – a dishwasher. The only thing still to arrive is the colourful cooker splashback. Matchgirl’s trying not to worry.

Much to her frustration, the Planner In Chief was absent during all this activity, pursuing the profession that’s paid for it, and settled for regular text enquiries about progress.
Day One has ended with the new kitchen’s footprint established. We’ve been promised that it will be finished by Thursday night, barring some final electrical tweaks on Friday. Watch this space.
