Activating Plan B
by Russell Turner - 17:06 on 16 March 2020
More of my races have been felled by coronavirus: Wigan is definitely off (although it might be rescheduled), ditto Glenlivet 10k. My Cheshire 10k race number arrived today, but as that was to be part of a double-header with Wigan it’s now not worth the 800-mile round trip.
There’s a good chance anyway that my weekend hosts would not be home because Triathlon Cathy and UltraPaul are in lockdown in a tri training camp in Lanzarote. I suppose there are worse places to be stuck.
The one glimmer of brightness in my sporting calendar is that a new date has been set for the Edinburgh Marathon: September 6. That does mean a stand-in taking my place at the City Limits wedding gig the night before and consequential financial loss, but at least I get to run. Matchgirl’s scheduled to fly to Plague Island that day so she’ll have some reorganising to do if she wants to claim her place.
In the meantime, I’ve signed up for two half marathons to replace Alloa and Shakespeare, both of which are guaranteed not to be cancelled. Plan B and I Ran It Anyway are both virtual races (with real bling) I can run when I want (before a cut-off date) although I plan to do them close to the two cancelled dates, virus and weather permitting.
Plans for a virtual marathon on the original Edinburgh day were abandoned following advice from one of Matchgirl’s running sages who reminded his followers that training for 26.2 miles reduces a runner’s immune system. Impaired resistance in May, when coronavirus will be hitting its peak, may not be advisable.
