Still Making Progress
by Russell Turner - 17:38 on 31 December 2020
2020, rather than going out with the PB bang I’d hoped for, ended with a whimper, but at least now that my back has recovered I was able to complete an easy Hogmanay run. The 5k brought me up to 1,114 miles for the year, 100 more than last year despite a meagre 42 miles in December.
My third full year of running was the most successful yet, with PBs from mile to marathon and a 12:20 100km virtual ultra in seven runs across four days. Let’s hope I’ve not peaked because I have targets for next year: sub 4:30 marathon, sub 2hr HM, sub 1:30 10 miles, sub 52min 10k, sub 25min 5k. We’ll see.
My medal collection has doubled this year, with nine representing PBs or other notable achievements and only three for cumulative efforts, which don’t really count because they’re too easy to gather (although I do like my Dominic Cummings Eye Test Challenge).

There may be fewer next year. Despite Boris’s incurable optimism I doubt that restrictions will begin to lift before June or July – or even later – so give it a couple of months and race cancellations will resume. Happy days. More virtual efforts beckon.
