Sun But No Fun

by Russell Turner - 22:09 on 19 January 2021

The weather is not my friend. Yesterday’s run was cut short because of the ferocious wind. Today the gale had abated and the sun gleamed across the Highlands… but with no power whatsoever. Ice and frozen slush meant my hopes of a decent run were dashed from the start.

Every mile, as the road direction changed and the shadows of hedges and trees were cast in new positions, I waited for the tarmac to clear up and proper running begin. Every mile, sooner or later, I was cautiously traversing another frost slick or frozen stream, reduced to walking for safety. It wasn’t fun.

I’ll continue with the 10k programme, however long it takes, but it might be another couple of months before PB hopes become feasible.

Back at The Rural Retreat, further race updates had flooded my inbox, neither of them good. As predicted, the Wigan Running Festival in March has been pushed back another year. I could defer my 2020 race to 2022 but instead will take the virtual option and run an HM at home. Also arrived was a missive from the Edinburgh Marathon, optimistic that May’s race will happen but making plans in case it doesn’t. A final decision will be made early in March.

And City Limits’ one-and-only wedding gig in March has been cancelled, meaning the first date in the 2021 diary is in mid-May. As we’re in lockdown until at least mid-February I won’t bank on it.
