Back On Stage

Life is getting back to normal: a gig has got in the way of race training.
Our first gig in 15 months found City Limits at a village hall wedding reception last night. Social distancing was conspicuously absent, and the dictat forbidding dancing was ignored, so if there’s a Highland covid spike in a couple of weeks we could know why. Policing would have been much tighter at a hotel function.
It was good to see a happy crowd again, although my enjoyment was dimmed by some duff playing on my part – punters must have thought Les Dawson was guesting on bass. Hopefully I’ll be back on form (such as it is) after more gigs and practice and a bit more enthusiastic about my resumed musical career.
My lack of skill was ironic, considering I’d spent the afternoon practising, rather than running the virtual GNR81. Today, as I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, or condition, to take on 13.1 miles, I settled for four to try out a new-to-me hydration pack, cast off by Matchgirl. It’s worked well enough for me to give it a proper test tomorrow when, hopefully, I’ll be fit to complete the full run, despite the forecast Saharan temperature. My plan is a restful run/walk: Leamington is the target for a serious HM effort.
The route is still undecided. The continuing search for Matchgirl’s ideal marathon route took us on Friday through more spectacular Highland beauty in Strathglass and Glen Affric. I’m tempted by Strathglass but will probably settle for Cromarty to spare myself the 45min drive to get there.
If I wanted, I don’t have to run the GNR81 because my medal has already arrived, but that would be cheating. If Brendan Foster and his chums trust me enough to send my reward in advance I’d better do the work to earn it.
