An Attack In The Night
by Russell Turner - 14:00 on 24 July 2021
So much for plans. Today was the day I’d intended to resume my running career with an easy 5k to begin the run-up to the York 10k a week tomorrow. But that didn’t take into account a savage attack of cramp in my right calf at 1.45am. Ouch. It was difficult not to shout.
Where this came from is a mystery, although City Limits’ gig a few hours earlier – our second since lockdown – may have had something to do with it. Not that it was particularly demanding. We played a brisk two hours, from 8.30-10.30, in front of a modest betabled audience in an Inverness pub protected from Keith’s musical exhalations by a plastic screen. (Access to the stage mostly bypassed the bijou crowd, which was good news for an anxious Matchgirl.)
Whatever the reason, this morning the calf was still sore and Coach Matchgirl recommended arnica, a compression sock and no running – not even any walking because we play again tonight, at a wedding reception, so rest is best. The lack of a particularly painful spot suggests I’ve not torn a muscle, she opines. That’s a relief.
Tonight I’ll supplement my on-stage water bottle with an electrolyte tab and, with luck, be back on the run tomorrow.
