Hiding From The Elements

It’s Week 5 of (eventually) Edinburgh Marathon training, but since Monday’s Week 4 long run I’ve not run a step. Injury isn’t to blame (although my ankles were sore after the frosty, wind-lashed eight-mile epic), just a disinclination to face a week of awful weather. Wind, rain, sleet and sub-zero temperatures. What fun. Matchgirl’s faced it a couple of times but she’s made of sterner stuff.
The silver lining is that a few days’ rest has perked up my ankles no end and both are raring to go. The rotten conditions ease up a little tomorrow so I’ll be back in action then, and with no gigs this weekend I’ll soon be on schedule again.
Despite such wussery, and knowing I’ve little chance of winning, I’ve entered a draw for a place in the inaugural run777 Central Eastern Europe Tour, worth £3,000, in May next year. The lucky winner gets to run seven marathons in seven countries in seven days, beginning in Prague and ending in Venice. The draw takes place in September, by when I’ll have forgotten all about it.
Closer to home, much more achievable, and costing only £12 is the Miltonduff 10k, near Elgin, which I’ve entered to fill the gap between Alloa HM and London Landmarks HM. My training plan has me running for 60mins that day anyway, and as it doesn’t begin until 2pm I’ll be well recovered from the previous night’s gig, which happens to be five minutes from The Rural Retreat. It must be fate.
So that’s two 10ks and three HMs in five weekends, concluding with London Landmarks. I’m looking forward to them all, even if the weather’s bad. It’s a lot easier to ignore when racing than training.
