A Second Opinion
by Russell Turner - 20:54 on 25 March 2022
My much-delayed appointment with Mr Physio took place today. His ‘working diagnosis’, arrived at following a few questions and a few (lack of) flexibility tests, is an insertional Achilles tendinopathy. Bursitis was not mentioned, so medical opinion is divided.
Treatment is much the same: no running for a few weeks, then build back gradually. Ideally that would begin immediately but Mr Physio will let me run London Landmarks first – something I would do anyway unless told (and convinced) my foot would drop off afterwards.
I’ve also been given a few exercises to do twice a day; they’re not onerous so I should be able to keep up. It’s like being a real runner, especially as my heel is taped up again.
I was also given the go-ahead for Sunday’s Miltonduff 10k, although whether I can be bothered remains to be seen. The weather forecast is great, unlike that for the following week, so I could be tempted.
Less likely to happen is my participation in the Edinburgh Marathon. I’d already written it off (more money wasted), a decision confirmed by Mr Physio. Surprisingly, the usually cautious Matchgirl still thinks I could take part as long as I’m more interested in the race day experience than the finish time. I can’t get a refund, a deferral, or downgrade to half marathon so my entry will remain. Run or another DNS? We’ll see.
Nine days to London Landmarks, and fundraising for Breast Cancer Now continues. All contributions welcome. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bassman99
