The Return Of The Runner – Again
by Russell Turner - 15:43 on 17 April 2022
Running has resumed. Yesterday, after a careful warm-up and gentle walk to my start point, I ran 5k, mostly flat or downhill, taking care not to do so at a silly pace. I was prepared to take a walk break after miles 1 and 2 but didn’t feel the need. My ankle/heel felt fine and my breathing was steady.
Less steady was my heart rate. The pace I ran should have shown an easy HR; instead, I was in the threshold zone – my aerobic fitness has plummeted. That’s disappointing but not unexpected. Fortunately I’ve eight weeks in which to prepare for the beginning of the 16-week London Marathon training plan.
One thing I won’t be doing in the immediate future is running the same day as gigs. My happy feet were much less happy after a two-hour drive to Inverurie, set-up, performance, pack-up and two-hour drive home. The next two weekends are both double-headers, so athletic endeavour will be confined to any three days out of Monday-Thursday. Fortunately, the feet feel much better now – I can almost imagine the day when I don’t even think about how they are.
London came a little closer today after flights were booked (much the same as for Landmarks despite fuel price rises) and accommodation (more expensive, but that’s inflation for you). Only five-and-a-half months to go.
