The Race That Might Not Be
by Russell Turner - 15:03 on 03 May 2022
It’s May, less than four weeks before the Edinburgh Marathon – the latest of this year’s races I’ve entered but won’t run. Who said running was cheap?
The deadline for transferring places between injured, ill or poorly-trained entrants and last-minute would-be marathoneers is tonight. However, as the marathon’s Facebook community page is filled with desperate offers to sell places, and no buyers, it looks like I’m stuck with mine. There’s a small chance I might use it, as I’ll be there anyway to cheer on Matchgirl, but it’s more likely that I won’t. I’ll decide the night before.
My troublesome feet feel almost (but not quite) better, so another few weeks of modest runs, run/walks and walks, plus exercises, should find them restored to full, ouch-free mobility, although that’s not ideal training for a marathon. Since London Landmarks, a month ago, I’ve not run five miles in one go, and it’s December since I ran more than a half marathon.
That, it must be said, was my triumphant 31-mile/50k backyard ultra, which was embarked upon with equally unimpressive training: a two-part 18-miler in September, then Covid, the Yorkshire 10 Miles in October and a series of short runs and run/walks. So 26.2 miles isn’t impossible, especially as finishing, rather than a time, would be the target. Time will tell.
Just in case, and following a lucrative nine-gig month in April, I’ve ordered the latest Brooks Glycerin GTS shoes – at a mere £150. Who said running was cheap? When I tried my regular size 13 last year they felt too small. The new ones will be 14s. Let’s hope they’re not too big.
