Taking A Chance
by Russell Turner - 20:46 on 28 May 2022
The decision is made – tomorrow I will attempt to run the Edinburgh Marathon with totally inadequate training (if the training plans are to be believed): only one run longer than 10 miles since mid-December, and only one longer than five miles since London Landmarks at the beginning of April. I’ll either crash and burn at 20 miles or prove that anything is possible.
I do have a cunning race plan, though. As much of the first few miles is downhill, and mostly flat thereafter, I intend to run the first 5-6 miles then switch to a 5:1 run/walk. At 20 miles, or thereabouts, if I’ve the energy I’ll attempt to run to the finish. Or maybe from 23 miles. We’ll see.
For a change, the weather will be on my side: the forecast remains mild with light wind and no rain. Even better, my right foot seems to be in full working order and the left only slightly stiff, although the 40min walk from the hotel to the start will loosen it up (unless Matchgirl and I weaken and take a taxi). My ROWED month is either coincidence or a cure for hurty heels.
Sadly, although we’ve walked 1.8 miles between trains, stations, and tonight’s Italian eaterie, my streak ended today because nothing was recorded by the Garmin. I’ll make up for it tomorrow. Wish me luck.
