Cutting It Short

Easy Week 7 of marathon training ticked over nicely. Week 8, when sessions begin to get tougher and long runs longer, was going (mostly) fine until today.
Saturday’s tempo run was downgraded to a run/walk after half way, thanks to heat, humidity and wind. I was back on course yesterday, for a birthday run featuring tempo intervals, but today was even warmer (20ºC), windier (18mph) and humider (73%).
The plan called for 14 miles, which I intended to cover at a 6:1 run/walk: within the first mile I knew it would be tough. Energy was totally lacking. By five miles I was struggling; by six I knew I wouldn’t make 14 miles. In the end I managed a mere 7.5.
Maybe it’s recent poor sleep. Or not eating enough or correctly. Or maybe, now I’m 64, I’m not up to it any more. I’ll try again next week, and probably have a couple of weeks, at least, of only four runs instead of five.
Other marathon news features Matchgirl, who’s suddenly decided that she’d like to join me at the Yorkshire Marathon – as a runner, and as training for the Dava 50k in November. That’s the good news; the bad is that the humble Airbnb single room I had booked for the weekend is no longer suitable. Decisions will have to be made.
