An Unexpected Spring

by Russell Turner - 21:23 on 14 January 2025

Suddenly it’s almost spring. On Saturday, Garmin told me it was -6ºC. How accurate that is, I don’t know, but it certainly felt the coldest weather I’ve run in. Two days later, the snow and ice were gone and the running temperature was 12ºC.

Today (according to Garmin) was only one degree cooler; I could probably have run in my shorts (but didn’t risk it). Mild and dry is forecast to last for at least the next week, although a Jonah at Dingwall Leisure Centre, where I gave blood today, said more snow is on the way in a week or two, which could make the X-Border 10k on February 2 interesting.

Tomorrow’s a rest day – sensible after the blood-letting – then the final two Week 2 runs will be run, fitted around getting a new tyre for Grandson of Seat, the rear offside being completely flat when I emerged from the dentist yesterday. Fortunately I had an inflator in the boot; less fortunately, the tyre had lost half its pressure by three-quarters of the way home. There’s always something.

Last week, a post popped up on Facebook to promote a London Marathon competition offered by one of its sponsors, GetPRO, which flogs “performance protein products”. All that’s required is to run twice a week during the four-week qualifying period. Easy. The only downside is that, at the last count, 92,423 runners were vying for the three free marathon places on offer. That’s even worse odds than getting in through the ballot.

But there’s still a chance. Wish me luck.
