On The Run In Glasgow
by Russell Turner - 17:55 on 27 January 2025
It’s been a hectic weekend. We were on the periphery when Storm Éowyn ripped through on Friday, but it was enough for me to downgrade Week 4’s first run from intervals to an easy 5k. Saturday found City Limits in Dornoch, playing at a posh birthday party in a posh hotel, which meant I got to bed at 2.30am, leaving time for some brief sleep before driving south to Glasgow with Matchgirl for the rescheduled Strictly Live show at the Hydro after an early dinner at La Fiorentina (recommended).
All that, plus a restless night in a decent Premier Inn with comfortable bed but rubbish pillow (only one each), left me not on top form when I met with Squirrel James for a short-notice run. Lack of pre-run activations and breakfast probably didn’t help. Matchgirl, who prefers her training solo, did her own thing.
Fortunately, James was willing to go at my slower pace as he showed me some of the sights of Glesca; even so, some walking was involved. Despite that, it was an enjoyable run through streets and parks, around pedestrians, and past some stupidly big cars – a novelty when compared with my usual rural rambles.
While running, he revealed that this blog, the readership of which has plummeted since I swapped tales of cats and rural life for running, has picked up at least one new follower. So hello to Jay Dee: tell your friends, and maybe we’ll get a run together some day (if you’re slow enough).
