Counting The Days

by Russell Turner - 22:04 on 22 April 2025

There are just days to go until my fifth Virtual London Marathon, although I’m unsure on which day I’ll run it. Or how. Or even how far.

As I’ll be chauffeuring Matchgirl to the airport on Sunday, and watching the real thing, Saturday is my target. With luck, the forecast showers will have faded before I set out. Last year was a point-to-point, beginning at Glen Affric; this year the plan is to stay close to home and run six 4.5-mile out-and-back segments with a pit stop after each one. Time is not a consideration. Or, depending how I’m feeling, I might pit stop after every second segment, which suggests that time might be a consideration after all. I’ll know on the day.

A run/walk is the plan, most likely 4:1 so I don’t overdo it. This is just the final long training run before Edinburgh. If I feel frisky after 26.2 miles I might be tempted to press on to 50k – for my fourth ultra – then maybe a little further to increase my distance PB. It’s probably the only chance this year of gaining a new one.

The bronchitis has fully cleared up and the legs feel fine, which is handy. Less happy is Squirrel James, who is also training for the Edinburgh Marathon. A few days ago he ran 18 miles. Today, his knee ‘popped’ when he was lifting something at home and is now sore and swollen. He’s got a month to recover.
