Introducing Mrs Woodpecker

by admin - 17:23 on 03 April 2010

It was no surprise that yesterday's fine weather didn't last for a second day, which made today's bird snappery a challenge and necessitated raising the Pentax's ISO to 800 on a couple of occasions.

This, of course, was when Mrs Woodpecker came within snapping distance for the first time, so her first portraits are a touch noisy. Also, she chose to perch further away than her bolder partner, which didn't help the cause of top class bird photography.

Female GSW 1

No matter – I have her at last, and there are sure to be opportunities for better pictures.

The only other snaps to survive quality control were of tree sparrows, which will please Soo. She doesn't see many in Yorkshire.

Here's one. You can see another, and a couple more woodpeckers, on my Flickr site.

RPS Update: I've received more feedback regarding my mini-rant a couple of days ago, from Philip, leader of the PhotoActive empire. He writes:

The sort of rubbish that some of these snappers produce is purely an excuse for incompetence. There is no 'deeper meaning' except in the over-heated egos of the people who purvey such nonsense.

That's that, then. Other comments are welcome.

Congratulations on your LRPS Russell, it's been a long time since I said that someones panel wholeheartedly deserved the distinction.
