A Wistful Anniversary

Those pesky Icelanders are at it again. Not content with taking our cod, and refusing to return British money that was in their crashed banks, now they're taking over our skies.
For the first time (or the first time ever, as BBC reporters stated several times today – whatever happened to standards?) UK airspace is empty because of the volcanic cloud that's drifted our way from the Eyjafjallajoekull eruption.
So many plans ruined – and they could have been ours. Today's the day, one year ago, when Matchgirl and I took off on our honeymoon flight to Namibia. The law of averages states that several honeymoon couples will be hanging around empty airports today instead of beginning their big adventure. They have our sympathy.
Matchgirl timed it well, for she returned from Shetland yesterday on what must have been one of the last flights into Inverness Airport. The alternative would have been an eighteen-hour ferry crossing – a prospect that fills the extremely unnautical traveller with horror.
Namibia, sad to say, is now no more than happy memories, guide books, brochures, a souvenir DVD and a lot of photos. It seems a long, long time ago, and we've no immediate prospects of another Great Adventure to which we can look forward.
But there's always the blog if we wish to look back. Part One of The African Odyssey can be found here. Happy days.
The Etosha Pan in northern Namibia – we'll go back there one day
