Ungrateful Pine Martens and Contented Cats
by admin - 23:14 on 06 June 2010
After yesterday evening's early appearance by Master Marten I was determined to be ready for him tonight.
By 7pm the gate was covered with a feast of Nutella, raisins and mixed nuts, artfully placed so I could capture him appearing through foliage in a more natural composition. I'd even rearranged the furniture so my tripod could spread its legs and get the Pentax into a lower position.
And I'd remembered his egg.
But pine martens don't care to be taken for granted. By 10.30 it was dark and he'd still not come for his supper. The ingrate.
Another one from the archive, as he chose not to appear today
It's been a quiet evening – this morning Matchgirl left for a whole week's business in Shetland while Spider and Bess spent much of the day in a competitive sleeping challenge. It was a draw.
Before she left, Matchgirl gave me detailed instructions on how to care for her girls and ensure they stay friends while she's away. It would have done her heart good to see them tucking into their tea just a few feet from each other without even the hint of a hiss or a glare.
They may not yet be buddies, but they've definitely found that they can share a cottage.
