Sulky Cats and a Taste of Fame

Another morning, another involuntary awakening by the resident fauna. Yesterday it was Mr Pheasant at 5.30; today it was an over-excited cat.
I assumed that the culprit was Spider – Matchgirl, after much internet browsing, is convinced our new house guest's morning yowls are of confusion caused by feline dementia – but on stepping out of the bedroom I found her seated quietly halfway down the stairs.
Bess, the real culprit, chose the same moment to charge up the stairs in an effort to get my attention. She stopped before colliding with the incomer and hurried back down where I found her under the table along with the expired ex-rodent that was the reason for all the showing off.
Bess with an earlier victim
She emerged in time to almost bump noses with Spider, who'd ambled downstairs to find out what all the commotion was about. Some reactive hissing ensued. That was the last straw for the small game hunter, her show-off moment ruined, who flounced to the cat-flap and waited impatiently to be let out. It's a hard life.
As Master Marten's smorgasbord had been eaten there seemed little reason to stay up, so I returned to bed in the hope of a couple of hours' peace. The ex-rodent was put to one side – Master Marten will get extra protein tonight.
Bess was over her huff in time to return to the competitive sleeping challenge. Both her and Spider did their best but the result was another dead heat.
One of the snaps which got special treatment
Another high spot of the day was the arrival of the latest RPS Journal. This featured a piece penned by a promising Black Isle snapper about his rise to LRPSness.
My piece appeared almost as I'd written it, although a couple of places where I'd not treated the RPS or snappery with appropriate gravitas had been smoothed over, and a paragraph near the end had been mangled by a ham-fisted sub editor who'd run out of space. Amateurs.
Distinction successes are a regular part of the Journal and feature all of the panel photos. Special treatment was given to Tranquil Harbour and Snow Monkeys, which will disappoint Matchgirl – she would have put Peekaboo Bess on the front page.
So I'll now forever be in the Society archives on the same pages as real, world-renowned photographers. Fame at last!
