A Sympathetic Paw

Bess and Spider continue to have an uncertain relationship marked by mutual suspicion and a little jealousy, but today might mark a turning point – thanks to Romeo.
Early this evening a clattering cat-flap heralded the entrance of a panting puss with a hugely fluffed-up tail. Matchgirl ran outside at once to spray the increasingly troublesome neighbourhood bully with the squeezy bottle that's kept handy by the door, then came back inside to comfort Bess who by then was huddled halfway up the stairs.
The two ended up in the bedroom where much petting and soothing talk took place.
After a while, Spider, who'd watched the drama with bewilderment, wandered upstairs to see what was happening. I followed, to find her seated in front of the closed bedroom door, staring up at the handle. Matchgirl was keeping her out, for fear of causing the petrified puss more stress, but it seemed that Spider was just as concerned as she was.
When Bess came back downstairs for a comforting bite to eat and the security of her basket, Spider showed what might have been mistaken for solicitude. Perhaps they could become friends after all.
More animal antics occurred later when Miss Marten came for supper, watched with interest by Spider. Honey smothered with nuts and raisins is the new favourite, for Nutella tends to become hard quickly in the current sunny conditions, and the visitor spent more than ten minutes making sure she ate every scrap.
She didn't climb The Nutella Tree for seconds, which is a shame; the conditions were reasonable, unlike yesterday when snaps were snapped in failing light. They do show, however, a marten who's enjoying her food.
I'll be patient. Sooner or later I'll get a good, sharp climbing shot. The cover of National Geographic can't be far away.
