A Big Day for the Druids

by admin - 21:03 on 21 June 2010

Midsummer's Day, beloved of hippies and pagans, the longest one of the year – and in the environs of The Rural Retreat an overcast, dull one. So I didn't miss too many photo opportunities by beginning the first of four consecutive Mondays I've foolishly agreed to work at GNoME HQ. I'm just too accommodating.

I did rise early in the hope of sharing the solstice with visiting martens but they'd come by overnight or earlier in the morning and were in no mood for more sweet treats.

That means today's snaps are ones taken a couple of days ago that have only just reached Flickr. The subject is Miss Marten, who's now being seen more regularly; Master Marten has not been spotted for seven days.

The young lady's meal tonight was abandoned when she heard Mr Montague whistling his way to the bins. Martens have an impressive turn of speed when it's called on. Honey and nuts are still top of the culinary pops; an egg (the top broken open to encourage consumption in situ) has languished unregarded for two days while the woodpeckers have eaten more Nutella than the intended diners.

I'll have to come up with new ideas to lure photogenic mustelids into the trees.

Bike Update: Kawasaki San was in action for the first time in a while yesterday when Matchgirl and I enjoyed a jaunt to Applecross for lunch. Spectacular scenery and mostly quiet roads. A grand day out, Gromit.

The old boy now shows 101,000 miles on his odometer and is clearly desperate to retire. His horn has ceased to function, his lights die at unexpected times and his fork seals need renewing.

We'll do a few more miles together before that day comes.

Put some honey on top of the egg.
