A Bit of a Breeze

by admin - 23:21 on 04 July 2010

It's been a quiet day in The Rural Retreat. Apart from the hurricane howling through the trees in the garden. And the sound of Spider crashing around the spare room in pursuit of her catnip mouse. The newcomer may be twice the age of Bess but she's rarely short of energy.

That said, the two of them did spend much of the afternoon in another competitive sleeping match. Bess was the winner because Spider couldn't decide whether to snooze in the rocking chair or the basket she's recently adopted.

The cottage is particularly quiet at the moment because this morning Matchgirl flew away to prepare for her monthly business dealings among the Vikings of Shetland. I could have used my enforced singleness to get out and about the Black Isle with the Pentax, but the gale that's roared across it most of the day would have made holding the camera steady a tough task.

Master Marten almost lost his balance on the gate a couple of times while he ate his supper, watched by Mystery Moggy who plainly hoped for some leftovers. However, both left when Bess ambled past, lost in her usual unseeing daydream, although the pine marten returned for more an hour later.

Miss Marten, who took her turn an hour after that, faced a similar balance challenge but fought the conditions long enough to get her fill.

Another portrait of Master Marten – when Miss Marten
arrived it was too dark for snappery

It's probably wrong to hope that one day both martens will arrive together, for my reading tells me that they're solitary creatures and a meeting could prompt a severe disagreement. With luck they're both young enough not to have reached that stage. Time will tell.
