The Striped Invaders

by admin - 23:26 on 15 July 2010

The ninja pine marten returned today in daylight while I relaxed inside The Rural Retreat after my last day at GNoME HQ before a week's well-earned holiday. The sneak.

My back was turned to the living room window for only fifteen minutes, but between seven and 7.15 someone tip-toed on to the gate and snaffled half the Nutella and nuts left there.

James and Terry weren't here, despite an invitation based on a groundless belief that they'd see something tonight. I told you so.

Confident that someone would be back, I replenished all foodstuffs except the honey. I'd put some down earlier, but within seconds word had got around the local wasp community that some fool was giving it away.

A couple of wasps had discovered the honey a week ago. Next day they brought friends. The day after that their friends brought friends. Today the airspace above the garden gate was as busy as Heathrow and little was left for the enjoyment of pine martens. The stripy hordes had even knocked off some of the nuts.

No more. Honey is off the menu.

Marten 72

Master Marten appeared around 8.30 and dined appreciatively. His egg and some of the Nutella was left for later. A pine marten likes to keep a little in reserve.

Bike Update: The day began with a rain-lashed journey to RM Motors where Kawasaki San was to have new fork seals fitted in preparation for the journey south on Saturday. The holiday transport, however, is in the balance: if the five-day forecast shows no improvement, Agent Cooper may be called upon to convey us to Yorkshire.
