Happy birthday to me – so it's a shame that Matchgirl had to leave this morning to fulfil her latest duties on Shetland.
She did hand over a card and gifts before her departure, the highlight being a night at Loch Ness Lodge, on a date to be arranged, with a hot stone massage thrown in. Splendid. That's a night for two, of course – she's not daft.
The day's been quiet since then. Bess and I shared a walk up the lane beside The Rural Retreat and in the evening I had a takeaway curry all to myself as a birthday treat.
The Retreat's resident moggies seem to have resumed the routine that was upset by our recent absence. Bess spent most of the evening in her new favourite place – curled up on the table behind the upraised screen of Matchgirl's laptop – while the ever-restless Spider wandered around the cottage in search of entertainment.
By 10pm, Bess had been disturbed enough and crouched by the cat-flap until I opened the door for her. Seconds after the door closed, Master Marten appeared in (what was left of the) daylight for the first time in two days. No chance of snaps.
When he'd gone, after a very brief supper, I opened the door to find Bess seated on the doorstep, still staring at the gate. Cries of alarm from a blackbird at the bottom of the garden suggested that the visitor had been spotted on his way home but no clues were left as to where that is.
I suspect that marten snappery is now finished for another year, or at least until winter, for Dolphin James and I have a plan to follow his tracks through to snow, back to his lair...
