Farewell To Yuri
by admin - 23:21 on 13 October 2010
Moggy-loving Matchgirl, who's an adopter of the Amur tigers at Highland Wildlife Park, received bad news today – Yuri, the seventeen-year-old male, has been put down because of untreatable kidney problems.
This is a particular shame because she's not yet taken her day as a carnivore keeper, when she'll get close to the big cats. Sasha and her adolescent cubs are still there, but we'll miss Yuri who by all accounts was an easy-going chap. Just a big pussycat, in fact.
The Rural Retreat's resident moggy proved equally laid back this morning when she sauntered into the garden following her breakfast despite the noisy presence of Mr Pheasant, who's recently begun to be seen again after a couple of months away.
While Mr P strutted around at the bottom of the garden, demanding to know the whereabouts of Mrs P and the well-grown chick that follows her around, Bess sat beside the garden gate with her back to him. She still knows how to make a point.
Eggshell is a common morning sight in the vicinity of the gate – the remains of one of the treats left out for The Invisible Pine Marten every evening to ensure that we'll see one again next year. Tony, part of Bess's cat-sitting team, gathered digital proof of marten presence during our Shetland holiday with the help of a trail camera trained on The Nutella Tree.
I may investigate such cameras – who knows what we might find prowling around the garden at night.
Not sure I'd want to catch him on camera though as who knows what he might be doing.
