Feline Frolics

by admin - 23:38 on 29 October 2010

Mice of all shapes and sizes are potential quarry of The Rural Retreat's small game hunter, so the sight this morning of Bess attacking another innocent victim in the living room was no great surprise.

More unexpected was the discovery that the resident rodent assassin now numbers Apple mice among her enemies – the befuddled feline had taken exception to the USB cable that dangled from the mouse left on the coffee table.

An equally inept display of hunting skill was provided a few hours later by Romeo. The neighbourhood bully's not been seen in the garden for a while, but he was there today, tormented by the sound but not the sight of Mr Pheasant, who lurked somewhere in the vicinity.

Eventually he tracked his voice to the bottom of the garden and trotted down there to stare into a patch of long grass, then leap into it. A second later, an indignant pheasant flew out of the undergrowth and over the cottage; a moment after that, Romeo reappeared, looked around, baffled, and wandered home. Even Mrs Montague admits that her pet's not the brightest animal in the district.

That was the height of today's excitement. There's still no news from the Falklands, and now there won't be until at least 7am on Monday, which leaves Matchgirl and me on tenterhooks all weekend, our financial windfall still in the balance.

Even then, we might not receive the news. Matchgirl's obsessive checking of the investors' bulletin boards for news and fresh rumours appears to have worn out our broadband, which has not functioned all evening, much to her frustration.

So, at the time of writing, when this post will make it online is unknown to me, although the fact that you're now reading it means our digital link to the world has been restored. If you see what I mean.
