A Long Day on the Road
by admin - 20:58 on 19 November 2010
Our finely tuned alarm cat ensured that we were both out of bed by 6am, all set for an early start to eat up the miles between The Rural Retreat and as far south as possible. We still managed not to be away until after nine, by which time the alarm cat had disappeared. Bess doesn't care that she won't see us for a week.
Perthshire and the Borders were beautiful, mist (and occasional fog) drifting through autumnal trees that cried our for snappery. But we'd many miles to do and no time to dawdle so I had to let another opportunity go by.
Then it was dark, and the A1(M) turned into the M1 at rush hour through one of the most populous parts of England. Crazed drivers were all around. No, not me. Progress slowed.
We called it a day at Tibshelf services, in Nottinghamshire, where after a confusing hunt through the fog we found a basic but perfectly adequate room provided by Days Inn, a Travelodge-type establishment I'd not heard of before. I don't get down south very often.
Our lodgings are not of Boath House standard (although they do come with free wi-fi) but Matchgirl bore the lack of luxury with fortitude. She knows there's something more swish to enjoy tomorrow.
Book Update: Stormin' Norman of Dingwall Printers last night emailed a quote that makes his firm much more cost-effective than Blurb. We've taken a big step towards becoming our own publishers as well as authors of quality snappery. Watch this space.
