Ice and Water

by admin - 21:07 on 06 December 2010

So much for the thaw. The temperature's back below zero and ice covers the doorstep, although we've been spared the blizzards that have paralysed the central belt.

But that's not why gloom pervades The Rural Retreat.

Last week, the exploration company that holds a sizeable chunk of my meagre savings announced that it had struck oil for the first time in the Falklands. Another company, in which I have a smaller holding, managed the same a few months ago, so this was great news: the Falklands' future as the next oil empire was assured and my investment secure.

But today the management told its many investors that they'd made a slight mistake. Closer examination revealed that what they'd actually found was oily water.

This, it seems, is very rare, although that's of little consolation to the hordes of disconsolate would-be oil barons who saw the share price cut in half. Such is life. At least I'm still ahead. For now. This share dealing's a tricky business
