Crested Tits and a Chilly Morning
by admin - 22:30 on 06 January 2011
Squirrels were the quarry when Dolphin James and I visited his secret place, somewhere in Speyside, this morning.
We braved roads still affected by yesterday's snow, beside one of which we observed a severely crashed people carrier, but the squirrels weren't impressed by our efforts. Only one showed himself during the three hours we suffered sub-zero temperatures, and as he stayed out of camera range or on a feeder we didn't even get his picture.
But there was compensation – a flock of hyperactive coal tits accompanied by a smaller, but equally active, flock of crested tits, a bird I'd never seen before.
Much snappery was carried out, at the end of which I had two crested tits worth keeping. They're fast little blighters. James claimed to have none he'd wish to show, so either his standards are higher than mine or our shivering was more obvious when transmitted down the length of his humungous 300mm prime lens.
We returned to the Black Isle just before more snow, which made the journey to tonight's meeting of Cromarty Camera Club interesting. Despite the weather there was a decent turnout, so James's presentation on Pine Martens I Have Known must have been a good draw. The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery was also officially unveiled.
Norman and Co are still on holiday, so our plan to descend on Dingwall Printers tomorrow has been postponed. We'll try next week.
The book's online version continues to gather worldwide attention. The preview has now been seen in Mexico, although no new sales were made. Those Mexicans look after their pesos.
