An Exciting Sighting

Preparations for the launch of The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery continue apace.

This morning I created two tasteful posters – one to promote its unveiling at the Eilean Dubh Restaurant (times confirmed as 3pm to 7.30pm) and one to advertise the book at the places where it will be sold. I'll show them to you when they've been OK'd by my co-conspirators.

This was followed by email invitations to people who've made book reservations, and anyone else I can think of who might be enticed into the venue to make it look busy. Spread the word. We'll welcome anyone on the day – we're not choosy.

And I even updated my home page for the first time in ages.

So there's not been much opportunity to participate in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch. I'll do my bit tomorrow. But I did take the time to wander into a patch of woodland that adjoins The Rural Retreat in search of anything of interest.

Although I failed to find evidence of the tawny owls we hear most evenings, there were compensations.

One was a hole in a decayed tree that looked suspiciously woodpecker-sized. I'll keep watching.

The other was three rosy-chested birds that I identified immediately as bullfinches, despite never having seen one before. Back at the Retreat, my book confirmed the sighting. Exciting stuff.

The only snap I managed was far too distant and shaky to show the public, but Matchgirl was impressed anyway. That's what wives are for.

I'll hang around there again tomorrow. In the meantime, the best I can offer is another snap of our black great tit. He was also too distant to be sharp, but I'll persevere. I bet few of the twitchers saw one of them today.

Tony and I saw Bullfinches in the garden on our last visit to the Rural Retreat. I did put a photo on flickr, you must have missed it!

My memory must have blocked it through jealousy.
