Intimations of Spring
by admin - 23:29 on 26 February 2011
Spring is just around the corner. For the past two days a tractor has been busy ploughing Mr Moneybags' field next door, birdlife has become louder and more active, and Bess liked the look of the weather so much that this morning she took Matchgirl and me on an extended ramble up the lane and through neighbouring woodland. Much scampering and scrambling up trees ensued (by Bess, that is).
She paid for her energetic morning, though. The Rural Retreat's resident moggy spent much of her afternoon in an exhausted bundle on the sofa. She's not a young cat any more.
The brace of woodpeckers that took turns all day to visit the garden enjoyed a sweet bonus thanks to the non-appearance last night of any martens. They made the most of the goodies left in The Nutella Tree, as did the squadron of tits and robins that cleared the windowsill of nuts and raisins and made a good attempt to eat the peanut butter. Nothing goes to waste.
No-one touched Master Marten's egg, so it was still there when he made a stealthy visit this evening. Matchgirl heard chomping noises but as we're both avid followers of the sub-titled Danish thriller on BBC4 we couldn't take our eyes off the screen.
The only other things of note today were receipt of a cheque for the first pre-paid copy of The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery – from Sanday, Orkney – and my debut as a music teacher: Marten James Junior received a bass guitar for his birthday so I was called on the show him the basics.
He exhibited the enthusiasm for major and minor scales one would expect from a young teenager but was thrilled to be able to play the intro to I Shot The Sheriff. A star is born.
