Time With The Birds

by admin - 20:52 on 11 March 2011

The snow cleared yesterday but returned overnight and had cleared again by this afternoon. Most confusing. But proper snow is forecast for Sunday. Emergency supplies will be bought tomorrow.

Much of today was spent loitering at the living room window, the better to observe the avian action: lots of yellowhammers, non-stop woodpeckers and all the usual suspects.

Among them was one of our less frequent visitors – the treecreeper, who still insists on staying close to the apple tree, which means there's no chance of a decent snap, as the hugely cropped blurry example below demonstrates.

Blurry Treecreeper

He did creep around a tree a couple of times but was spooked off by hyperactive yellowhammers and spent more time on the ground. Maybe he thinks he's a lawncreeper.

Black Great Tit 6

Our black great tit also made several visits when the sun was shining and allowed me to get his best picture so far. I'd less success with sparrows, however – a few were captured in flight but this time I was not so lucky with the focus. I'll keep trying.

Great Spotted Woodpecker 20

Throughout the day the great spotted woodpeckers took turns on the fat-filled coconut but the male provided me with the best portrait. He was snapped during a breather, just before he jumped on to the coconut for a good feed.

A day well spent.
