The Official Launch Shindig began at 3pm with three authors alone in Eilean Dubh Restaurant, Fortrose, faced by a long table filed with tea, coffee and biscuits and no-one to enjoy them. Oh dear.
Half an hour later the place was packed and we were signing The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery as fast as we could. Result!
Our customers were on the mature side – no surprise on a working day – but enthusiastic about the book. A few, who'd bought it elsewhere, brought it with them to be signed. "The best £20 you'll ever spend," stated one fan.
The rush tailed off around tea-time but sales continued until after 7pm, by which time forty-one copies had changed hands. Several more reserved copies will find new owners tomorrow, leaving us just a handful to sell and in profit at last.
Until we write a cheque for the next print run, that is, but you have to speculate to accumulate.
The Bumper Book is slowly making its way around the world: copies were bought today for dispatch to Canada and Australia (thanks, Lizzie), and the first sales from this website will go to Galashiels, Germany and New Zealand. Matchgirl, who returned from Shetland in time to join the fun, plans to send copies to the USA.
Part Two of the media blitz takes place on Friday, when the Inverness Courier carries a feature on the Highlands' favourite picture book. It's a shame that by then we'll have none to sell.
Come on, Norman – we're relying on you.
