Farewell To A Noisy Friend
by admin - 22:54 on 11 April 2011
I saw the body at the side of the road opposite Mr Moneybags' field when I returned to The Rural Retreat from an afternoon at GNoME HQ. It hadn't been there when I left at lunchtime.
I fear that Mr Pheasant has gone to The Great Cornfield In The Sky.
Two of his wives were seen in the garden earlier this evening, and the skinny young male who sometimes accompanies him was spotted loitering in the lane. However, of Mr P there's been neither sight nor sound.
There's still a chance he'll reappear, for other mature males are around, but I'm not optimistic for I'd seen him a few times in the field close to where I picked up the corpse. I left it at the bottom of the garden in hopes of attracting a fox – who am I to interfere with nature's cycle. Martens are unlikely to be interested in carrion of such a size.
It's a shame that I didn't keep the last few snaps I took of Mr P, especially one of him kicking and pecking the fallen peanut feeder to extract the remaining contents. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
So here's a snap of him at the base of the apple tree, taken in November. With luck I'll be wrong and there'll be more to come.
