Death of a Volcano
by admin - 23:53 on 08 May 2011
Not a great deal of gardening took place this weekend, although one task was carried out – the levelling of The Seed Volcano.
This wasn't done for aesthetic reasons, even though the mound beneath the feeder near the living-room window had grown to an epic height, but to improve the security of the birds drawn to feast there.
The hillock's size, combined with rampant greenery, made it too easy for Romeo to lurk unseen – as Bess has discovered on several occasions, and as an even more unfortunate robin found out yesterday morning.
The removal of several spadesworth of debris turned to grass-covered peat has left the vicinity similar to that around Krakatoa after the eruption. Nature will soon fill the gap but I'll ensure that the volcano doesn't rise again.
As for Bess, she's been hunting too. However, as her chosen quarry is butterflies she's caught nothing. Some challenges are too tough.
Marten Update: Food continues to be taken, most nights, but still no sightings. Most frustrating.
