Mice might not be to blame for our failed phone line and the increased scurrying in The Rural Retreat's wall space. According to the BBC, the country's suffering a plague of voles.

Whatever the cause, Matchgirl is determined to fight back and came home today burdened by two types of electronic deterrent – one to protect the electrical wiring and one to make the atmosphere uncomfortable for rodents – plus two humane traps that I suspect will never be used.

Mr Buzby flew in this morning, full of chat, and left after installing a new phone socket and an internal line tacked unobtrusively above the skirting board, safe from little nibblers.

Book Update: The latest problem to beset The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery turned out to be a false alarm. Andrew examined sample copies today and declared them fit to be sold. Binding has resumed and the full print run is expected in Dingwall on Wednesday.

Marten Update: There have been no more sightings of Baby Marten or any other, although the food continues to be taken.

As you probably know, chocolate is the best way of catching mice in humane traps - they love the stuff!

The likelihood of Matchgirl sharing chocolate with mice is very remote!

Peanut Butter is best. They love it.
